What is the best flea protection for an 11 wk Shiba Inu?

I have an 11 week Shiba Inu and I was wondering of all the flea protection options which works the best and safest and kills ticks as well?

My favorite is Frontline Plus. Keeps fleas and ticks off. It's about $100 or so for a six month pack, but right now Frontline is running a special if you purchase through a vet that carries it, buy 6 months get 2 months free (at least my vet is). It works great for my dog and cat!

Im finding it hard to find a Shiba Inu breeder where I live?

I live in new Zealand and I can't find a Shiba inu breeder. we are considering buying a puppy one. We are prepared for the puppy, but it's just finding a responsible breeder that is the problem. Any tips on how to find any? any New Zealand people here?

When I was going through the process of finding a good healthy dog I checked craigslist.com, but then just bought one at

http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/dogs/sale/1100247/Default.aspx

most dogs on this site are legit, it's just a matter of how much your willing to pay and also the crazy price tag for shipping. But you may be able to find a local one at that site.

PLZZ HELP! How much should I be paying for a shiba inu that is a FAULT/CREAMY?

I want to buy a shiba inu puppy-9 weeks from a breeder. However it is a fault/creamy. So how much should i be paying for a shiba inu that is a fault?
Guess what? She called in right now and she said her husband wants the pup for 1000 dollars! Wtffff?? What a fraud! Never buy from brooklynshibainus! If u search brooklyn shibainus up in google, she ads alot! She's such a fraud!
I think she doesn't even care what kind of a person I am. She keeps rescheduling and i wasted my time! A reputable breeder will give the pup at a decent price for a good home! Thank you everybody!

I have no idea whether the breeder you speak of is a good breeder or not.

What I will tell you is that for GOOD, reputable breeder the price of a pet puppy is the price… it does not go UP because of a fault.. it does not go DOWN because of a fault… it simply is the price.

For example: I had 7 pups. Sold 5 of them as pets (even the 1st pick of 3 long time breeders) All went for $1800. The pick went for that amount… the one with a bit more white than is acceptable went for that amount… the one with not quite as much bone went for that amount.. the one that was a bit too quiet to be a show dog but made a superb family dog went for that amount.

I rarely breed. I never make money when I do. I only breed when I want a puppy to train out of a specific set of parents. I make no apologies for the price… and I have people clamoring for my pups. My response to people who say "You want THAT much for a puppy" is… "You can buy this breed less expensively elsewhere.. you pay for what you get. If you have to quibble about the price, you cannot afford to care for this dog in the manner it deserves." I give them the phone numbers for the local breed rescue.. and tell them about the farmer who breeds them down the road. I know in 7 years I'll get another phone call saying "I want one of yours this time".

Edit: I'll echo Bassetnut on this one. My guess is she bought some dogs on limited AKC registrations and decided to breed them anyhow. BLEH!!

What is the best grooming supplies to groom a Shiba Inu?

I have an 8 month old Shiba Inu.
Now that the weather has gotten warmer he is shedding a lot.
What suggestions do you have???

Do a quick search on Google images with this keyword 'Oster Grooming rake wide 18 teeth coarse'. This is what we use at our groomers and it works magic with those dogs that have a second coat underneath! Saves so much work when we bathe them. I saw a girl use one on a husky and it literally pulled piles of hair off that dog. It's amazing. It's called a rake. And we only use it on the ones that have thick hair. Other simple tools help like the slicker and metal comb for basic grooming but this is really important for pulling the loose hair out that hides under the surface.

How to discipline a Shiba Inu?

We just got a 5 month old female Shiba Inu. We are trying to train her, to come when we call, stay off furniture, not bark at tv noises, etc. When we eat she gets right in our faces and tries to get the food. What can we do to discipline her, without hurting her? Any ideas on training or discipline would be helpful. Thanks!

Ideally a Shiba needs to go to a training class. We put our Shiba through two different training classes (beginner and intermediate) and he doesn't have any major behavioral problems. As far as come when called goes you really have to do this in stages. First be a few feet away and call her…when she comes give her a treat. As she master this back up more and repeat. Pretty soon you will be able to be down the hall hiding in a room and she will come. You just have to repeat over and over and over again until you get the desired behavior. Shibas respond well to treats. The best way to prevent unwanted behavior is to either make a loud guttural noise like "Auughk Auughk Auughk" or get a tin can and fill with pennies and shake it. They will quickly stop what they are doing. Good luck. A trained Shiba is a fantastic pet.

Should i get a Shiba Inu of American Eskimo dog?

Hey guys,
I live in a 2 bedroom apartment in northern New Jersey. I am interested in getting a small dog. I grew up having a wonderful Yorkshire Terrier Roxy but i want to know more about other breeds. Please tell me about smaller dogs you like and about a Shiba Inu Or Eskies?
thanks for the help but they're only 14 inches about but thanx anyway . .

I can tell you about the Shiba because I have owned one and worked with the breed for five years. Shiba's are not like other dogs, they are stubborn, independent, dominant, and strong willed and many who are familiar with the breed would consider their personality somewhat cat like.

Because of all of these traits as well as the Shiba's extremely high prey drive they can never be trusted off leash. If the Shiba sees a small animal, its gone, and it will not listen to you if you scream for it to come back. They are also notorious for bolting out of open doors. Shiba's are commonly dog aggressive if not extensively socialized and can become so even with proper socialization once they mature. Shiba's can also be wary of small children, not all of them, but its not unheard of for Shiba's to not do well with children.

Finally, there are very few reputable Shiba Inu breeders in the U.S., I don't know an exact percentage or anything but I would easily say that most of the Shiba's bred and sold in the U.S. come from puppy mills and are sold in pet stores. If after everything I have told you about the Shiba you still feel like you can handle one then be prepared to wait for a puppy from a good breeder as they will not have puppies readily available and often only have one litter a year.

I wish I could tell you more about the America Eskimo but I have never owned or worked with one enough to give a knowledgeable answer.

Good luck with your dog whichever breed you choose.

is there any difference between a shiba inu and an alaskan klee kai?

im planning to get either an alaskan klee kai or a shiba inu. just wanted to know if theres any difference with the two breed? such as size, personality ect..

Actually, both are spitz dogs, as obviously a husky is a spitz breed.
More technical, a Nordic breed (for both, as well as both their larger counter-parts : huskies and akitas).

Obviously, no, they are not the same. There ARE differences. please do your research as NEITHER are for novice owners. But, I'd recommend the klee kai as a beginner if you want to go with either one of these breeds.

Shibas can be VERY strong willed, hard to train, and aggressive if not trained, raised, or bred properly.

If bred, trained, and raised properly though, they can be amusing, smart, at times very primitive companions.

Not too sure about klee kais, but shibas are much more similar to cats. they generally do not need your attention, and when they come for it, will typically only want a pet, not to be held.

Again, this is all general. not true to every dog, as even within a breed each dog's personality is different. But BOTH breeds require a firm handler, and a good deal of research. I'd assume the klee kai is not for a pushover, and i KNOW the shiba is DEFINITELY NOT for the faint of heart.

Is Icewind Farms a reliable place to purchase Shiba Inu puppies?

I am looking for a Shiba Inu and Icewind Farms seems to have healthy-looking puppies but I have read reviews on other sites that claim their puppies have behavioral problems. Please only answer this question if you have had experience with their dogs.
Please give me more answers to work with. Anyone with experience or who owns one of their dogs?

How to Choose a Breeder - National Shiba Club of America
http://www.shibas.org/newstand/how_to_choose_breeder.html

A search of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) site only shows 4 Shibas with Icewind in their registered names. http://www.offa.org/

A couple of things that stood out on the breeder's website were non-refundable deposits, using PayPal, preferring cash payments, no health testing information, and they do not appear to be members of their breed club (a sign of dedication, minimum standards being met, and educational opportunities).

Spend more time at http://www.shibas.org/ and talk to many breeders to find one that offers the best fit for you and can back up that are making an effort to produce healthy wonderful Shibas with good temperaments.
