3 Mistakes Most Dog Owners Make

Having any pet is a rewarding experience, but dogs have to be the best of the bunch. They are always glad to see you, never disagree with you and always give you lots of love. They aren’t the perfect pet for everyone though, some people prefer a pet which requires less attention like a cat, you never have to walk it and yet it will still give you attention when you need it and be a source of happiness, but dogs are more popular right now. Make sure you prepare properly if you are going to get a dog and you know exactly how to care for them and all the responsibilities you will have from then on, it is not fair to get one and then realize it is hard work to look after them and send them to a rescue center.

So here are 3 things you should know as a dog owner.

You need to train your dog: It doesn’t matter if your dog starts off adorable and they can do no wrong in your eyes, it is much better and easier to train them while they are young and don’t have ingrained habits you need to train out. It is crucial that they are trained because if they aren’t then they can and will develop bad habits such as chewing their bed to bits so you need to buy a tough dog bed, or they might bark all the time or try to bite people which would get them into serious trouble.

It doesn’t cost much to train your dog properly. The simplest way to train them is to attend some classes with your dog where you learn the techniques and get to apply them under the watchful eye of a trainer. It is up to you to keep the training going in-between lessons though until you dog has learnt to listen to you.

Your dog needs grooming: You will need to groom your dog a lot, probably once a week or at least every two weeks, so while you can take them to a professional to have that done then the cost will soon mount up. By grooming your dog yourself then you also develop a much closer relationship with them that you would if somebody else did it. While grooming on a weekly basis is basically just running a brush through their fur to keep it looking good and stop it knotting up (visit MyDogBrush.com for brush recommendations) then an important part of the process is to keep an eye out for any injuries or rashes and cuts etc they may have while you do it.

Give your dog lots of love and attention: People tend to think of pets as different to children so they don’t think they need any attention and affection, but that is not the case. While it is easy to forget that your pet has needs too, then one common problem that emerges if you do ignore them for too long is bad behavior starts to emerge as they try to get your attention in other ways. So set aside some time when you get home to fuss over them and play with them for a bit, or make sure you take them out for a walk each day and play with them then.
