It is not worth the risk to let any Shiba Inu off of a leash for the sake of an owners ego to have control over their pet. If you want to let the dog run, find a large fenced yard. No one can control these dogs instincts always.

    not every dog from …
not every dog from the same breed is going to be the same! i let my shiba off a leash whenever i’m in areas without cars such as upstate, hiking, camping and at parks etc. she’s never run away. even if she disappears for a minute or so she always comes running back.
also, we just got a kitten and they are soooo cute together. it is the best thing i ever did. now she has a little buddy and i don’t feel so guilty when i’m not with her.

    i agree with you …
i agree with you about being off the leash, but thats because they r bread to hunt small game so when they get a sent they just take off… but other than that if you train them they r very obedient

Hi! it`s possible! She needs to be afraid of loosing you! When she runs, you go in the opposite direction, don`t look back so she sees it! If it don`t work, go hide so she thinks she`s alone. call quietly for her so that se has to look for you. Every dog hates to be left alone! Use that feeling in your training!

I have the same problem, but with a pit bull. Our back yard is fenced in, and it took me awhile to figure out how she kept managing to get out, but one day saw her jump on top of the grill and over the fence.

    It will take TONS …
It will take TONS of patience from me to get my dog trained to not dart away the second I take him off leash. Just this weekend, after he passed beg. training class, he ran away from me and out of the store!!! Thank goodness it was after he graduated LOL

My shiba plays dart games with me when it’s time to go, keeping just out of reach. They can be most stubborn. I should work on retrieving as she loves to do in the house but I’ve tried at parks/tennis courts and she fetches but then loses interest and keeps running!

I have replied many times how to get a Shiba off the leash on other comments. Look for the previous replies, otherwise e-mail me.

my shiba ran out the door and ran straight into a car.. he didn’t break any bones or anything, but since then, he won’t go anywhere near the road, and you can take him for walks without the leash

    Is that truly …
Is that truly possible??? At every chance my shiba gets she runs away as fast as she can and the only hope of catching her is by numbers. She is such an escape artist, she has found a way out of seven different styles of cages. If you could tell me some tips on training this particular breed that would be awsome. Thanks a bunch!

    It depends on how …
It depends on how old you get them. I’ve seen shibas that get along with cats, but they’d rather eat most other pets, and as long as the kids are old enough not to pull the ears and tail, they should get along. Look up ‘the misanthropic shiba’ on google, there’s this great website about shibas.

I wish my shiba would do that. But there are rabbits and squirrels where we live and they’re way more interesting than we are. Shibas rock.

Love my 1.5 yr old Shiba. We usually put him on rope in the backyard. I do walk him without a leash in our backyard and woods and throw him tennis balls.

He’s a wonderful dog. We are very lucky. The 2nd day we had him he did take off for 3 days in the Winter.
