Anyone Have Problem With Shiba Inu Not Coming When Called?

I asked a previous question on this board but did not really phrase it correctly. I have been doing my homework in rescuing or owning a shiba Inu (yes I do support my local shelters and have adopted/volunteer there, please do not lecture me on not getting a pet from there) but I have read that they are escape artists and even when they get loose will not come when called. This is my largest concern with owning this breed every other problem I can handle. Can anyone tell me they experienced this problem with their Shiba?

Shiba’s are not easy. They can often be door darters and escape artists. Mine can open the back door and lift the gate latch. I have never taken her out of my yard off leash and I have had her 9 years.
She will return when called if she wants to but if something else has her attention she will ignore me and her training.
You need a fenced yard and lots of patience.
Oh by the way make sure your sweeper is in good condition. Shibas blow their coats three or four times a year and it isn’t pretty.
Good luck and hope you contact Shiba Rescue, they have lots of great dogs needing good homes.

The two shiba inu’s I know are very stubborn. Not so much escape artist but they need to be on a leash at all times, they will not come for anything, including cookies.

Every dog should know the recall and respond to it.

I would recommend you take your Shiba through group obedience lessons.

Sounds like my breed – escape artists and conveniently "deaf" when you call them.

The coming when called is *mostly* a training issue, but it IS more difficult to teach a shiba (or basset) to come reliably when they think they don’t have to. Depends if you want to put the effort into it.

    Best strategy:
    Secure fence.
    Keep dog mostly in house.
    Leash when taking out.
Plenty of ongoing obedience training to reinforce desired behaviors (in case the first three fail).

It is a common problem with the breed. Cesar Millan did an episode with a Shiba Inu that was an escape artist. He was able to help the owners and the dog.

They can learn to come when called, but it is NOT easy.

And it is important that you are a strong leader.

I would recommend Cesar’s books, DVDs and shows as well as Google Nothing In Life is Free.

Because they are so cute, many are spoiled. Or the owners give up on training.

Retired Groomer, had a couple of Shiba clients. They did fine with me because I did not put up with naughty behavior and rewarded good behavior.

I’ve said it before Shiba Inu’s are pariah dogs. They are a part of the group of Original dogs. They are domesticated but wired a little differently than many other breeds.
They require a lot of training, they are difficult and stubborn.
Mine will come when I call him but he is not allowed out of the yard off leash.
They are pushy and protective. My does not bark a lot but he was raised with basenjis.
I don’t recommend them for families with small children unless they are raised together from pups.
Shiba’s that I have had contact with tend to be nervous around small children.
They are good dogs when trained and socialized properly but they are dog that does require a lot of your time.
They are excellent watch dogs, very defensive but not mean.

Shibas generally don`t come when called if they get away.I own two shibas and one of them is an escape artist. She was on the run for a week when my son had possession of her and ended up in the vets where we finally found her she had been hit by a car late at night. The second time she got away we had already taken possession of her from our son as he had a new baby in the house and did not have the time to spend training her.All she did the second time is run around the neighborhood and came home on her own that same day.We have found the best way to make sure she does not escape again is that they are both on leash with harness as shibas tend to get out of their collars even in the fenced in kennel.I don`t ever want to have to go through the worry again so we put one of the screw in the ground pegs for dogs so that they can still run around but they are not able to climb the fence to get out. Hope this helps
