Can a Shiba Inu Be Left in a Room Alone While I Am at Work?

My wife and I really would like to get a Shiba Inu. However, the dog will be alone for 8 hours a day. With some training, is it practical to leave them in an isolated room (12′ x 10′)? I don’t want to go the cage route, but am not sure if this is an OK option.

A dog can be left alone that long, a puppy can’t. It is usually 1 hour for each month of age, plus one hour, so a two-month-old puppy can only be alone/hold its potty for 3 hours at the most. A dog would be fine, but not a puppy.

Shiba Inu’s are very active dogs and like to be doing something all the time. I think you are going to be safer keeping the dog in a large kennel because chances are it will get bored and try to tear things up.

I could not recommend such a practice unless you could rearrange your schedule. The dog would likely be under-exercised, become bored, and destroy your room and become nervous.

Sure, if you want the room stripped when you get back.

There aren’t many dogs that are okay with being left for that long. Would you be?

8 hours is too long but so many people do it. Your dog will probably be bored and/or stressed at being alone so long, and may toilet inside, but if you provide water then at least you won’t be reportable to the SPCA or whatever organisation you have.
