The largest horse within the British police force is ready to hang up his saddle and leave the workplace shortly, after a lengthy and distinguished career combating crime through the nation. Not only has Titan routinely been observed trotting around the Thames Valley district, but he’s also policed a few of the largest events within the British sporting calendar – including the FA Cup Final.
Titan is a Shire-cross horse and measures a significant 18.3hh, consequently dwarfing other horses that police the country alongside him. Because of his size he was perfect for the job of riot management, helping to hold back lines of aggressive football fans in the course of many encounters.
Titan will probably be kept at the Horse Trust haven in Buckinghamshire and is being retired mainly because of the results of ringbone. This causes him to have frequent lameness and so tends to make him unsuitable for the rigours often required by police service. Supporters of the gigantic beast have reason for optimism though – his retirement is merely temporary and then the force will assess his situation following six months of lying under magnificent field shelters and eating more hay than he could possibly ever desire.
With regards to Titan’s rider, it is a depressing occasion to see him head out, as it could have a substantial effect on the Thames Valley Police’s mounted division. Not just was he a fantastic horse to have for effective service, but he furthermore drew plenty of attention as a result of his size, so helping to cement relations between the police and the general public.
With a more positive note, this particular move does suggest that Titan will get to reunite with some of his old running buddies, who have previously moved to the horse refuge after years of service. Iceni and Dexte have been comfortably residing in and around horse stables right here for a number of years and may no doubt be thrilled to find their gentle giant of a friend back in their day-to-day lives!
In spite of the loss of Titan, the police force will continue using their regular mounted patrols, which have been very efficient at deterring crime in a great many locations.
