How Do You Train a Shiba Inu Not to Bite?

I have a Shiba Inu who is 4 in dog years. I just got him and recently he has started to bite people like visiting family members and neighbors. Can someone tell me how to teach him not to bite? (Preferably someone who has had the same issue.)

I grew up with an Akita Inu, which are very similar breeds.

Does your dog bite aggressively or playfully? If it’s aggression, he needs to be socialized in a very controlled environment. If it’s playful biting, you can distract the dog with a toy or a treat when encountering people. Or just a loud and firm "No," and a yank on the leash when he goes to bite.

You may want to check the dog restrictions in your area. Many towns and cities have no tolerance for biting laws for certain breeds and Akitas and Shibas are usually on the list. So be particularly careful when your dog is around strangers, you never know who will take you to court.

Best of luck!

get him some chew toys and when he seems to be getting agressive around people pull him aside and try getting him socialized by taking him on walks regularly. if it doesn’t work put him away when you have people over and only take him out on a leash!! My dogs are the same way we got em shock collars and put him away when we now people are coming over!

I had the same problem with my Shiba Inu,
Usually what you should do is keep a chewable toy near you in situations
you know he tends to bite more, so when he is going for the bite you
yell a sharp and loud "No!" and after that give him his toy, he should
start chewing on that toy and when he does you praise him for being good.

Dog biting is something you shouldn’t take lightly, and many times
evolve into bigger problems, I had a lot more problems with my dog
and I looked everywhere in order to solve it, until I found a really great
set of DVDS which really opened my eyes and let me make my dog
the man’s best friend he is..
