Some dogs have an overwhelming amount of energy. I understand terriers for example require an enormous amount of exercise to keep them from becoming bored and destructive. Other dogs are content with more couch time. Clearly all dogs require some amount of exercise. Where does the Shiba Inu fall relative to other dogs in energy level and exercise requirements?

~The Shiba Inu breed of dog, originating from Japan, is one of the most agile and high energy breeds of their kind. Originally trained as mountain dogs and bred for hunting, the Shiba Inu breed was born to run at fast speeds in search of the hunt. It is with this in mind that a daily exercise regiment must be put in place when concerning the Shiba Inu breed. A very specific and enriched exercise plan should be put into place. A program that is built for the breeds small stature and high energy levels.

As a puppy, our Shiba Inu was full of energy! So much, in fact, that she took it out on herself when we were at work. She chewed off the fur on her hips, chewed the legs of our tables and so on. Our vet suggested we get another dog to help get out her energy. At first, she was mean to the puppy, but as he grew that worked.
Our Shiba was a ton of work as a puppy. They are a very independent breed….almost cat like. She did not want to be held and would most of the time choose places to sleep away from us. As she has gotton older, she has turned into a wonderful dog. She still chooses when to listen, but she is lovable, likes our attention, and is well behaved…not to mention beautiful. I would say daily walks are almost a must if you do not have the type of yard where you can run and play with it. Hope this helps.
