Is a Shiba Inu a Good Dog for Couple With No Yard?

Thinking of adopting a Shiba Inu but want more input. I have read and heard some disturbing things about this breed, for instance, they can never be trusted outside (even in a fence in yard) without a leash. Does anyone agree or disagree with this. Also heard that they are mean. Let me know some of your experiences.

Shibas are in no way mean but they do need to be properly socialized at an early age. I have noticed mine try to protect me if she feels that I am threatened but 99.9% of the time she is happy go lucky and plays with dogs of any size or age and people. That being said, this breed needs alot of exercise and they should be given some form of outdoor exercise. They are escape artists and can climb fences and dig under them, so no they really can't be trusted without a leash or some type of second barrier system. They are very independent dogs and need consistant positive training or they will do as they please. They are trainable but it takes patience. I absolutely love this breed and can't imagine life without my little girl but please do your research before getting one- possibly talk to a breeder and see if you can visit and get to know the breed. Dogs are a great addition but the wrong type of dog for your lifestyle can be miserable.

They are only "mean" if they are abused and not well socialized as puppies.

They are escape artists and they are hunting dogs. So they want to hunt and if that means they have to climb up an 8 foot fence to go hunting then they will.

If you want an inside dog, get a toy breed. They are bred to be companions and most of them can be trained to stay by your side. But no matter what breed you choose, you should always keep your dog on a leash when not in a fenced in area.

Remember: If you have any doubts about bringing a certain breed into your life then do not get a dog of that breed. Just because one happens to be available does not mean you should rush out and get it.

I was thinking of getting a shiba but found that they were quite small and yappy! The breeder also told me that its best not to let them off leash as it is in their nature to 'chase'. I think if u train them well enough it shud be ok. They did not seem mean to me but they were a working dog in Japan and I think wud require a lot of excercise. The excercise and socialisation wud help them a lot, especially with other breeds. Good luck, i think they r a beautiful dog.

    Each dog is different.

These dogs tend to be head strong and think they are "boss" unless they have strong owners to prove them wrong.

    Obedience Training is a must.
So is a leash. Off leash the "boss" comes out and they see no reason to take commands from us lowly humans.

They will need long walks everyday, they are a mid to high energy breed.

See if you can find a breed club in your area. You could meet up with folks who have them and talk it over before you get one.

    I really recommend shelter mutts.
If you talk to the shelter attendants, they can show you the perfect dog for you. Really, everything is available in shelters.
They are temperment tested, inexpensive and come with lots of "extras". You save a life too, can't beat that!

I have some exposer to this dogs. Our dog loves playing with Shiba at our local dog park. They play hard and like to run real fast. They are very graceful, and need to move fast. Taking them for long walks will not work. Leaving them in a home alone for a long period for time may be a problem as they are a little independent. Independence can be a problem for some owner. They are not a little sissy dog.

Never trust outside is true. I have see and heard stories first hand.

…every dog should have a safe, secure yard…or be on a leash when outside
