My Shiba Inu Is Full Grown and Smaller Than Standard AKC Size?

My Shiba Inu is turning 1 year old in 2 weeks, weighs 14 pounds and is 14" tall, why has this happened?

They are not full grown until 2 years old, there’s plenty of time left

my female is 10 and is 14 1/2 in. at the withers, and 20 pounds at 10 years old

Because he doesn’t meet breed standards. It usually means bad breeding. And it means he’s not breeding quality.

Sometimes dogs are just undersized. Is she registered? Were her parents to standard and shown? What are her lines? All those can affect size. If a breeder is breeding without regard to standard then you can get lots of size variation. Even show breeders, though, will have undersized and oversized pups sometimes- it’s perfectly normal!

Also, she will probably still fill out some (though maybe not grow much taller) until she is 2 years old.

ETA: If she’s undersized, then she’s just pet quality. Doesn’t matter though if you’re not breeding her.

I’m not sure what the average height and weight for a Shiba is but I know it is petite. Undersized dogs can result from poor breeding and poor nutrition early in life. I’d be interested to know where you got the dog.

Honestly she is on track. Typical height for a Shiba female is 13-15 inches tall and weight is between 15 and 20 pounds

Is it a male or a female? Females will be smaller than males. Either way small dogs happen. The AKC standard is just a guideline, something that breeders should aspire for their dogs to be. It does not override genetics, dogs within each litter will be different sizes. Your Shiba just happens to be a little on the small side. Males should stand 15.5-16 inches so 14 is not freakishly small. As for weight, dogs dont finish putting on muscle and filling out until they are 18 months of age so he/she will bulk up more. The average sheba weighs 17-23 pounds.

As a breeder of Shiba Inu for the last 16 years your Shiba is at it’s full size at a year old I am assuming this is a female she should be over 13 1/2 inches and under 15 1/2 they usually weigh about 17 to 20 lbs
