Shiba Inus are an interesting breed of dogs that are growing in popularity in the U.S. Originally from Japan, Shiba Inus (“Shibas”) are small to medium sized dog that have a very striking appearance. They primarily have a reddish brown color with a furry coat, pointed faces and ears that stand erect. Another distinguishing characteristic of the Shiba are their bushy, curly tails that curl up towards their backs and loops around. Some people mistake them for foxes but they are not aggressive.

Shiba Inus are in the Spitz Family of dogs, which include the American Eskimo, Chow Chow, Finnish Spitz, Pomeranian, Samoyed and Siberian Husky. They are the smallest of the native Japanese dog breeds, which include the Akita. Shibas are similar in size to Beagles, although they typically have a thicker build, weighing between twenty and thirty pounds. Their faces are pointed and their ears stand erect. They can resemble foxes but don’t mistake them for one!

Shibas are very active dogs and they love to run and play. They would do best with a fenced yard but are adaptable to apartments, so long as they still get regular exercise. Shibas usually love to be with other dogs but can be wary of strangers and actually make good guard dogs. They aren’t known to bite but will bark if strangers come to your door. But once they know you, a Shiba will warm up to you quickly, especially if you give them treats and let them lick you!
