Yes, I am biased. I own two Shiba Inu dogs and I think they are simply to most wonderful breed. Although small in size, they have a huge hearts and are exceptionally loyal and brave. A word of warning, do not get a Shiba Inu unless you are committed to being a dog owner. These puppies have a lot of energy and require a lot of love and attention. If ignored their pent up energy will manifest itself in unwanted ways (say goodbye to your favorite leather loafers). As a matter of fact, their intelligence is demonstrated by the the fact they they can easily discern what your favorite shoes are and select those as their personal chew-toys.

But if you spend the time in treating them with love and teaching and training them, they are absolutely a joy to be around and make treasured companions. Shiba are by nature very clean dogs, almost cat-like, and easily housebroken. Bred in Japan as guard dogs and hunters, they are ever vigilant and have a strong instinct to chase small animals, so make sure you always have them on a leash. If you Shiba catches sight of a squirrel you will quickly learn that these doggies are FAST.

Although they are very smart, they have a independent streak and may not be completely submissive to your attempts to train them. For this reason it is very important you build a good relationship with your Shiba, they are much more likely to accept your commands out of love, than out of subjugation.

Always ready to alert you of any strangers approaching their (ahem, your) territory, and virtually fearless, the Shiba is an excellent guard dog. Aside from there extreme competence as working dogs, they are just plain fun. Shiba’s love to play, run and have a good time. I have two Shibas and they are great friends.
