What Is a Better Dog, Shiba Inu or Akita Inu?

I want a dog with with visual appeal. I also want one that will listen, socialize, and protect the house. Which is better, a shiba inu or an akita inu?
I want a dog that isn’t a pit bull (hideous fat folds) or little and annoying. I want a dog that won’t go crazy on other dogs. I want a dog that I can train without cruelty. I know that they are both wary of strangers and very protective of their owners. Which one should I own?

The Akita is suited to an experienced dog owner. They need early socialization and obedience training. The Shiba is headstrong and independent. Unless you are an experienced dog owner with past experience in obedience training I’d avoid these breeds. I took obedience classes with my Siberian Husky. I observed the breeds you expressed interest in and I have a friend who had a gorgeous Akita that she, sadly, had to rehome when she had her children. The dog’s behavior was too unpredictable. He became overly protective and aggressive.

Good luck,
Jony

In terms of obedience (which is what I assume you mean by "one that will listen"), neither are easy dogs. Due to their independence and intelligence, they can be a handful even for experienced owners.
Both will also require extensive socialisation from a young age to avoid huge problems later.
Buy an alarm system to protect your house, not a dog.

Both need experienced handling, but the Akita even more so with the size that they are.

An akita really doesn’t do socialising so well either, they are a very aloof dog and prefer not to socialise.
