Why Does My Shiba Inu Run Away if I Let Him Off His Leash?

My 8 month old Shiba Inu gets plent of exercise so why does he run away every time I let his leash off? Any training tips?

You need to train him in the art of recall.
Get a really long leash, you could use those kind that wind out and back in. You could use a recall word or a whistle that way he can hear you for sure no matter how far he is. Youll need a pocket full dog treats or dry dog food to get his attention.
You start with ur dog on the leash with a short lead so hes really close to you and you blow the whistle or say the recall word and give him a piece of a treat right after.( make sure not to give him whole treats just small pieces that way he doesnt fill up and you wont have a fat pooch) Do it about 3-5 times so he associates the word or whistle with food.
Well after that you just give a little bit more of slack on the leash and blow whistle or say recall word and PRAISE him and give food right after.
Repeat process every time giving him a little more slack on the leash.
When he hears the word or whistle he’ll come running back to get his tasty treat.
If you practice and work hard with him soon enough he’ll be coming back and you wont have to even give him food just PRAISE but make sure to keep him on the leash until your confident that he’ll come back if not then youll have to chase him down and it could undo all of your training and hard work.
Hope this helps a little! :)

Oh and by the way Shiba Inus are beautiful and intelligent dogs!

Because you haven’t trained him not to run off. look up trainers in your area who specialize in off leash training.

If you haven’t trained him to stay close or trained him with a recall word, that is a big part of the reason. Enroll in an obedience class with him. You will start to learn the recall word in beginner’s class. "close" you will learn in the upper level classes (intermediate and advanced). You can find a great trainer in your area here: http://www.apdt.com

Chances are he is not completely trained to heel (walk at your side)…Have you taken his to obedience class? If yes, have you kept up the training since you finished class?
If you say "yes" to the abopve, I would suggest another round of obedience class (this time "advanced, off leash")…If you answer "no" to the above….the answer is in front of you.
    GOod luck.
Shibas’s are SMART dogs…I know one that cometes at the "World Team level" in Agility.

my dog started running away at about 7 or 8 mo now at 3 yrs she has finally setteled. i think they are just trying to show indepenence. i strongly reccomend you only let her loose in fenced or wide open areas. in a wide open area she’ll come back when she’s bored.

you’re dog isn’t trained. try (with a long leash or in a fenced in yard) call your dog, blow a whistle, or anything you want-when he/she comes reward with a high value treat. repeat several times. when ever the dog is called or hears the sound he/ she comes and gets a treat and eventually your dog will come from off leash.

    good luck.

He doesn’t know not too, he’s also young.
try finding a doggie school in your area, the classes are very helpful and you can bring up particular problems you are having with your dog and they are addressed.
I listed some sites with training tips, etc.

Shiba Inus are known for bolting as soon as they know theyre free, or whenever you leave the door open. They are a very independent breed and an instinctive hunter that will react to anything that moves (like a squirrel). They are very smart and they know that if they can get away from you, they would have a better chance at catching a bird or a squirrel.
You can try working with an obedience trainer, but shibas can be pretty stubborn. Try teaching him that being close to you is a good thing (give him treats). Teach him how to come when called But if theres a chipmunk he’s chasing after he might just ignore you. (When he’s in the zone, he’s on the zone.) I think you should play it safe and always keep him on the leash….ALWAYS

im actually getting a shiba soon, and i spoke to the breeder about their naughty ways :]
    good luck!

maybe he just wants to explore his new territory…….once he gets settled in and comfortable he’ll probably settle down a little………..until then keep a very close eye on him
