I am looking to adopt a young Shiba Inu but I currently live in a 1 bedroom apartment with a cat.
The Shiba will do okay in an apartment if is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. The Shiba’s waterproof, all-weather coat protects it in both cold and hot conditions, so it can live outdoors if you have a secure yard of reasonable size. However, it does regard itself as part of the family and does not like to be left alone outside. This breed would be much happier living indoors with its family.

Would depend on how strong a prey drive the dog had.
Shiba Inu is an even older Japanese breed than the Akita; they were bred to hunt, in fact the name means little bush dog.
If you get it as a puppy the cat will probably put it in its place however. I’d crate train it anyway and always put it in the crate when you leave.

I think so. I live in a one bedroom apartment with a cat and a Shiba Inu as well. Shibas are actually great for apartments beacuse they are such clean dogs and do not have tons of energy they need to run off everyday! Just make sure you walk your Shiba often so he/she does get some exercise and outdoor time. You don’t need to go on mile long runs with them, but a few 30-minute walks will do some good.
Make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into though. Shibas are cute little dogs, but they are not easy! This is not a breed for everyone.
When you bring your new dog home, watch him/her with the cat. Do not leave them unattended until you are absolutely positive they will not fight! Never force them to interact either. They might never be best friends but animals are smart and will learn to get along.
